Man pleads guilty to August burglary in Road Town

Chalwell Estate resident, Kris Mitcham has pleaded guilty to burglarizing a Road Town restaurant and taking approximately $500 worth of items from the establishment.

Mitcham appeared before Magistrate Christilyn Benjamin on Thursday, October 15.

The court heard that on August 31, Mitcham entered the Upper Level Restaurant on Fleming Street, Tortola where he stole a number of alcoholic beverages, one plaid dress shirt, one pair of three-quarter distress jeans, and a number of boxers.

His sentencing was deferred to a later date to allow the court sufficient time to gather the necessary sentencing guidelines, which will help in determining the extent on Mitcham’s penalty.

In the meantime, the court also heard from Crown Counsel Kael London that the unrepresented Mitcham has another pending case for the cultivation of cannabis.

Magistrate Benjamin, therefore, remanded Mitcham to Her Majesty’s Prison until his sentencing date which is set for January 11, 2021.

On that date, he will also have an opportunity to make a plea on the offence of cultivating cannabis.

More than a dozen burglaries since March

The territory has experienced a vast number of burglaries since the first curfew was implemented in late March.

Businesses on Tortola including Sunrise Grocery Store, Sunrise Bakery, Nito’s Food Van, E&B Convenience Store, Pusser’s Restaurant & Bar on Main Street, Henley Seaside Bar and RiteWay.

In addition to a few home break-ins, a number of burglaries were also reported on the sister island of Virgin Gorda where businesses such as CCT, Buck’s Supermarket, Sugar Cane Restaurant, Speedy’s, Joy’s Mini Mart and Leverick Bay Resort were affected.

The Immigration Department and Department of Motor Vehicle buildings were also burglarized on the sister island.
