Alfie had multiple bruises and fractures at the time of his death in November 2020.
Benham told the jury that Alfie appeared "floppy" with blue lips. He panicked, tried to revive the child, and ran out of the caravan in distress, holding Alfie close.
He admitted to consuming drugs, including crack cocaine and cannabis, along with alcohol that night. Alfie's mother, Sian Hedges, was also involved in drug use.
Benham denied intentionally hurting Alfie and claimed he never saw Hedges harm the child. He explained that his statement, "what have I done?" at the hospital, was due to the fear that he had accidentally suffocated Alfie based on their positioning at the time.
