The Syrian state-owned news agency SANA reported that Macron extended his congratulations to al-Sharaa and emphasized France's commitment to lifting sanctions on Syria.
This diplomatic engagement comes following an announcement from the European Union last week regarding plans to ease certain sanctions imposed on Syria during Bashar al-Assad's regime.
The aim is to facilitate reconstruction efforts in the country, which has endured over 13 years of civil conflict.
In an unprecedented move, Macron has invited al-Sharaa to Paris, marking what would be the Syrian leader's first official visit to Europe.
The upcoming international conference on Syria, hosted by Macron in Paris on February 13, is expected to draw significant diplomatic attention, with Syrian Foreign Minister al-Sharaa anticipated to attend, according to a diplomatic official who spoke to POLITICO on the condition of anonymity.
Al-Sharaa recently embarked on his inaugural trip abroad, visiting Saudi Arabia on Sunday and meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara on Tuesday.
His rise follows the transition of leadership in Syria, as the transitional government aims to reshape its international standing and improve relations with foreign nations.
The movement supporting al-Sharaa, known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), was previously affiliated with al-Qaeda and is classified as a terrorist organization by both the United States and the United Kingdom.
The transitional government is actively seeking to enhance its international image, pledging to uphold the rights of women and various religious and ethnic minorities within Syria.
In a significant step towards this commitment, the new government has appointed a woman to the position of central bank governor and has initiated dialogues with Syria's Christian, Kurdish, and Shiite Alawite communities.
These actions are part of broader efforts to demonstrate a willingness to engage with diverse groups and foster a more inclusive political landscape in Syria.
