Matthew Rycroft, a drink driver, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for manslaughter after "abandoning" his 12-year-old son, Callum Rycroft, on the M62 motorway in West Yorkshire, where the boy was subsequently hit and killed by a car.
The incident occurred after Matthew crashed their car following a drinking session at a cricket club. He admitted to the manslaughter charge and was sentenced at Leeds Crown Court.
Judge Guy Kearl KC stated that Matthew had "abandoned" Callum and put him in "danger of extreme harm." Matthew had consumed alcohol at the club and insisted on driving despite warnings against it.
The court heard that after the crash, Matthew and Callum walked along the motorway for about 15 minutes before Callum was struck by a car while trying to cross back to the hard shoulder.
Matthew did not look back for his son, and when he was later found, he did not mention Callum until informed of his death. Matthew was also disqualified from driving for nine years and seven months.
