West Midlands Police reported the situation stems from two separate incidents, leading to significant traffic disruptions.
The closure affects the segment of the motorway between Junction 2 at Oldbury and Junction 3 at Quinton.
The police announced the closure via social media shortly after 11:40 AM on Thursday, detailing the sequence of events that prompted the emergency measures.
The discovery of the body was made shortly after 10 AM, necessitating an immediate response from police and emergency services.
In addition to the incident involving the body, a separate collision has been reported, significantly impacting traffic flow.
This serious crash involved multiple vehicles, specifically two motorbikes and a car, and occurred just past Junction 1 northbound.
As a result of this collision, additional closures are in effect northbound between Junction 3 and the M6, with the motorway impeded further north due to the nature of the incidents.
A representative from West Midlands Police stated, "We are at the scene of two serious incidents on the M5.
The motorway is closed in both directions near Oldbury/Quinton following these unfortunate events.
Drivers are advised to seek alternative routes as the closures will be in place for an extended period."
West Midlands Ambulance Service confirmed that two motorcyclists sustained severe injuries in the collision, leading to heightened urgency for medical services at the scene.
National Highways West Midlands is supporting the police-led incident management, providing traffic control and assistance to motorists affected by the closures.
Traffic disruptions stemming from these incidents are expected to create prolonged delays, and officials are urging drivers to remain informed and cautious while navigating alternative routes during this time.
