The incident, which occurred just after 06:30 GMT on Sunday, led to the closure of a section of the M4 for about two hours to allow for an investigation, which South Wales Police have referred to as a "serious collision."
The man was transported to the University Hospital of Wales by the Welsh Ambulance Service, which dispatched two ambulances to the scene.
