M4 Motorway Closed After Discovery of Human Remains Near Bristol
Police investigation underway following the finding of a body believed to belong to a man in his 40s.
The M4 motorway near Bristol was closed in both directions after the discovery of human remains on the carriageway.
Avon and Somerset Police are currently investigating the incident, which is centered on a stretch of the motorway located between junction 20 at the Almondsbury Interchange with the M5 and junction 21 near Awkley in south Gloucestershire.
Authorities reported that the body is believed to belong to a man in his 40s, and notification of next of kin has been made.
The police received several calls from motorists shortly after 6:40 PM on Saturday, alerting them to an object on the road.
An investigation has been initiated to ascertain how the body came to be on the motorway.
In response to the discovery, a portion of the M4 between junction 20 and junction 22, which includes the Prince of Wales Bridge over the River Severn, was closed for several hours.
Additionally, the eastbound section of the bridge and the M48, which runs between the bridge and the M4, were also shut down.
National Highways indicated that police began releasing traffic congestion affecting the M4 and M48 eastbound around midnight.
The eastbound lanes of the M4 were reopened at approximately 1:30 AM on Sunday, with the westbound closures being lifted around 3:00 AM.
Avon and Somerset Police are appealing for anyone who was traveling on that segment of the M4 on Saturday evening and may have relevant information or dashcam footage to contact them.
