This investigation was prompted by the Conservative members of the London Assembly, who raised concerns about a potential breach of the established protocols for gifts and hospitality.
This development follows revelations by BBC London in October that highlighted discrepancies in the mayor's official City Hall registry declaration, which was both incorrect and delayed.
A spokesperson for Mayor Khan acknowledged an administrative oversight but emphasized that the matter had been rectified promptly: 'Any gift accepted by the mayor is declared openly and transparently.
In this case there was an administrative error which was corrected.'
Sadiq Khan received six tickets, valued at approximately £3,000, from a private events company to attend Taylor Swift's performance at Wembley Stadium on 15 August.
Accompanying him were five members of the City Hall staff, including two senior officials.
The concerns, formally raised by Conservative Assembly Member Susan Hall, questioned whether the mayor's actions contravened the rules governing gifts and hospitality.
Highlighting the potential conflict arising from being hosted by a private company that had business dealings with City Hall, Hall petitioned the GLA's monitoring officer, Rory McKenna, to clarify if any legitimate reasons existed for the delayed and subsequently altered declaration of the tickets.
Furthermore, questions were posed regarding the broader implications of accepting gifts from contractors and external suppliers engaged with the GLA.
In response, the monitoring officer indicated that most of the allegations would not lead to investigations, except the concern regarding the 'appropriate level of caution' exercised by the mayor in receiving the tickets.
Susan Hall expressed her dissatisfaction, stating, 'Whilst I welcome an investigation into the propriety of accepting these tickets, after months of asking Khan for answers, I am disappointed that the monitoring officer isn't considering the fact that the mayor declared these tickets late, initially mis-declared who donated them, that they were undervalued, or that the donor was a GLA contractor.
More answers are desperately needed.'
A representative for Sadiq Khan pointed out that the mayor was not involved in the procurement or tendering processes for GLA events, affirming that the mayor's office remains committed to adhering to all procedural requirements.
They added, 'The mayor's office will continue to ensure all the right processes are followed, and looks forward to explaining the approach that was taken in this instance.'
The situation highlights the delicate balance required in managing public office responsibilities while ensuring transparency and integrity in engagements with external entities.
As the investigation proceeds, it will scrutinize the processes involved and aim to affirm public confidence in the governance practices of City Hall.
