Local Elections 2024: Millions Vote in England and Wales; First Results Expected After Midnight
Voting is underway in England and Wales for local elections in 107 councils, 11 mayoral races, and 37 police and crime commissioner positions.
Millions are eligible to vote, with polling stations opening at 07:00 on Thursday.
Voters must show identification to vote in person.
Counting begins after polls close at 22:00 on Thursday, with the first results expected after midnight on Friday, and results continuing throughout the weekend.
A by-election is also taking place in Blackpool South following the resignation of the Conservative MP. The Blackpool South by-election winner will be announced early on Friday.
Mayoral results, London Assembly elections, and some police commissioner and council results will be announced on Friday and Saturday.
No elections are taking place in Scotland or Northern Ireland.
Broadcasters, including the BBC, cannot report on campaigning or election issues during polling hours (00:30 to 22:00) on polling day.
However, they can report on political events and stories not related to the elections.
