Lloyds Announces Major Branch Overhaul, Including the Elimination of 1,600 Jobs

Lloyds Banking Group plans to eliminate 1,600 jobs amid a restructuring driven by a rise in digital banking.

With most customers managing their finances online, the group, which includes Halifax and Bank of Scotland, will also create 830 new positions, resulting in a net job loss of 769. The job cuts will not affect lower-level staff and will primarily be managed through voluntary redundancies.

Despite the reduction in branch roles, Lloyds is expanding their relationship growth team, offering more remote consultations to customers, thus reducing wait times for appointments. The changes reflect the group's digital-first strategy, acknowledging that not all customers are ready or equipped to transition to digital services.

Accord Union highlighted that the restructuring will significantly impact branch staff, with management roles mainly affected. This is part of a broader trend in banking, with several major UK banks announcing job cuts and branch closures due to the shift towards online services.

Lloyds has been adapting its business model since February 2022 and scheduled the closure of 45 branches this year, with most shutting down in the spring and the rest later in the year.

However, the bank is committed to reassigning impacted staff to other roles within the company and aims to avoid compulsory redundancies. After the closures, Lloyds Banking Group will maintain a reduced network of 1,061 branches across its various brands.
