Appointed in 2018, Neal guided Lloyd’s, a renowned insurance marketplace, through challenging times marked by economic turmoil, geopolitical strife, and an ongoing effort to reshape its workplace culture.
During Neal’s leadership, Lloyd’s navigated significant global events, including the Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit, and Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.
These challenges impacted the firm financially, with substantial claims paid out.
Lloyd’s reported a pre-tax profit of £4.9 billion as of June 2024, signaling a substantial recovery from losses in 2022 incurred by increased claims due to the Ukraine conflict and the pandemic.
Neal’s tenure at Lloyd's was also characterized by efforts to reform the workplace culture following reports of sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct.
A 2019 survey revealed nearly one in ten employees had witnessed sexual harassment, and a quarter had observed excessive alcohol consumption in the workplace.
Neal implemented measures to improve the environment, aiming to establish a respectful and professional culture across the marketplace.
Lloyd's Chairman, Bruce Carnegie-Brown, praised Neal's contributions, highlighting the successful strategic initiatives that positioned Lloyd’s as a leading voice acknowledged by governments, regulators, and customers worldwide.
“Today we see excellent performance at Lloyd’s, real strategic intent and execution, and an industry-leading voice that is valued by governments, regulators and customers around the world,” said Carnegie-Brown.
In his upcoming role at Aon, Neal will serve as the global chief executive of re-insurance and global chairman of climate solutions.
Reflecting on his departure, Neal expressed gratitude for the opportunity to have contributed to Lloyd's resilience and success, stating, “I will be forever grateful to my colleagues and staff across Lloyd’s.” He looks toward addressing critical global challenges, particularly those related to climate transition, in his new position.
As Lloyd’s prepares to embark on a new chapter following Neal’s forthcoming departure, the industry watches closely for his yet-to-be-announced leaving date and the subsequent leadership transition at the historical firm.
