An Irish court has sentenced a man and a woman to life imprisonment for the murder of Robert 'Robin' Wilkin, aged 66, who was killed at the Sliabh Liag/Slieve League cliffs in County Donegal on June 25, 2023. Alan Vial, 39, from Drumanoo Head in Killybegs, and Nikita Burns, 24, from An Charraig in County Donegal, were found guilty of the murder and received their sentences at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin on Friday.

Detective Garda David Durkin testified during the trial that Vial had prior convictions related to road traffic and public order offenses, while Burns had no previous criminal record.

Wilkin, a native of Omagh, County Tyrone, was the eldest sibling in his family, with two sisters and a brother.

One of his sisters, Irene McAleer, spoke publicly after the sentencing, describing her brother as someone whom the family looked up to during their childhood.

She expressed that the family finds some closure in the sentencing but remains devastated by the brutal nature of his death.

McAleer characterized Vial and Burns as “two cold, calculating individuals” and expressed that the murder had brought about an “agonizing journey filled with grief, denial, and undoubtedly anger.” She stated that the details of the murder and the apparent lack of remorse from the convicts were overwhelming.

According to her, there had been misunderstandings around Wilkin's relationship with the family, clarifying that he was not estranged but had lost touch over time.

The emotional impact of the trial was significant for the family, as McAleer noted the harrowing experience of hearing the “gruesome evidence” in court and reiterated their ongoing struggles with the trauma of the murder.

In his remarks, Mr. Justice Paul McDermott commended the Irish police for their extensive and professional investigation into the case.

He acknowledged the family's pain and suffering and confirmed the life sentences for Vial and Burns.
