Legal Experts Warned Ministers of 'High-Risk' Transgender Guidance in Schools

According to a BBC-reported leak, lawyers have warned that the UK government's new guidance on gender identity issues might legally endanger schools.

Despite concerns about potential misinterpretation of the Equality Act, the guidance, which emphasizes parental involvement and child safety, was deemed lawful by the government.

The policy, which advises informing parents about children's gender identity requests except in rare harm-risk cases, and permits pronoun refusal on religious grounds, faced legal criticism before its publication. Key provisions criticized by lawyers were not amended in the final document.

Equalities Minister Kemi Badenoch asserts the guidance is legally solid, but critics, including educational leaders, are seeking legal clarity. The government maintains its position, despite cautionary notes in the draft and upcoming public consultation potentially leading to further revisions.
