Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira announced this on the social media platform X. The summit will also include leaders from 20 countries with full or associate member status in the BRICS group.
Vieira highlighted the importance of this meeting, stating it will involve "very important decisions for the development of all these countries, for cooperation, and for improving the living conditions of all their inhabitants." The BRICS nations have been active in seeking ways to strengthen economic cooperation, especially in light of evolving global economic conditions.
Concerns regarding trade policies have been brought to the forefront by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on BRICS member countries if they undermine the U.S. dollar.
At a prior summit in October held in Russia, BRICS leaders discussed strategies to increase non-dollar transactions and bolster the strength of local currencies among member states.
Under the leadership of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil aims to enhance collaboration with developing nations, referred to as the Global South, and to reform multilateral institutions for a better representation of current global realities.
Lula has laid out priorities for the bloc that include developing payment systems to facilitate trade and investment among BRICS nations.
Moreover, Brazil's chief negotiator for the BRICS group, Eduardo Saboia, mentioned in a discussion with AFP last month that there is no formal strategy in place to replace the U.S. dollar as the global currency, but talks are ongoing about using local currencies for transactions.
Since its inception in 2009, the BRICS coalition has expanded significantly to include countries like Iran, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates.
Together, BRICS nations account for a substantial portion of global economic output, highlighting their impact on the international economic arena.
