This day also marks the anniversary of Auschwitz's liberation on January 27, 1945. The theme for 2024's remembrance is "Fragility of Freedom," highlighting the importance of cherishing and safeguarding freedom globally.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and other leaders, including Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf, paid their respects and condemned hatred.

The Royal Family joined in the tributes, sharing a photo of King Charles and Queen Camilla lighting candles. King Charles, prior to hospital treatment for his prostate, reflected on the day's theme, warning against taking freedom for granted and emphasizing the importance of learning from past atrocities.
