Labour has abandoned its monumental £28bn yearly pledge for green investments, a plan initially unveiled two and a half years ago.

However, the proposal was gradually diluted and by autumn, key figures like Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves avoided referencing the £28bn figure publicly. Recently, the plan's financial commitment has become murkier, contributing to confusion over Labour's stance on the matter.
Even when challenged on BBC Radio 4, Shadow Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds evaded confirming the figure's status. Discrepancies between Starmer and Reeves' statements only fueled perceptions of discord.
Labour has opted to scrap the specific funding amount prior to the upcoming Budget, acknowledging that clear-cut answers were needed. The decision suggests an adjustment in strategy, as Labour focuses more on projecting economic reliability to counter criticism and appease skeptical voters.
Although the number is discarded, the policy remains. How Labour will now execute this initiative without the promised funds is a question they must tackle, especially as opponents accuse Starmer of inconsistency and lack of conviction.
