The controversy surrounding whether Diane Abbott will be allowed to stand for the Hackney North and Stoke Newington constituency she has represented for over 37 years underscores accusations against Keir Starmer’s team of purging the Labour left.

According to Deputy Leader Angela Rayner, Abbott has not been treated “fairly or appropriately” by some Labour colleagues.

Keir Starmer rebutted claims of a purge, stating the party aims to select “the highest-quality candidates.” The Labour Party is finalizing its remaining candidates before the upcoming National Executive Committee meeting next week, ahead of the June 7th, 4 pm deadline for candidate nominations.

Several leftwing figures find themselves excluded or in doubt about their candidacies.

Faiza Shaheen has sought legal advice after being blocked from standing in Chingford and Woodford Green, where she narrowly missed defeating Iain Duncan Smith in the 2019 general election.

She alleges a campaign of racism, Islamophobia, and bullying; however, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury Darren Jones denies factional motivations behind her exclusion.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who represented Islington North since 1983 and led the party from 2015 to 2020, will run as an independent after losing the Labour whip in November 2020 over comments on antisemitism.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle announced his suspension from the party and exclusion as a Labour candidate for Brighton Kemptown following a complaint about behavior from eight years ago.

Sam Tarry, a former shadow minister, was deselected by local Labour members in Ilford South in 2022 and has raised allegations of “vote rigging” in his deselection process.

Diane Abbott, Britain’s first black woman MP and the longest-serving black MP, claims she’s blocked from standing again, which Keir Starmer and other frontbenchers deny.

In contrast, Apsana Begum, Britain's first hijab-wearing MP, appears secure as the candidate for Poplar and Limehouse despite previously facing targeted harassment and a reselection vote.

Several other prominent Labour left members are poised to return to parliament, including Richard Burgon, Zarah Sultana, Nadia Whittome, Clive Lewis, Olivia Blake, and John McDonnell, the candidate for Hayes and Harlington.
