Labour MP Jas Athwal Apologizes for Substandard Rental Properties

Labour MP Jas Athwal, representing Ilford South, faces criticism after the BBC reported poor conditions in his rental properties, including black mould and ant infestations. Athwal expressed profound regret and pledged quick repairs, though he claimed he had been unaware of the issues due to agency management. Conservative leaders are calling for his resignation and an investigation into potential breaches of Redbridge's conduct code.
Labour MP Jas Athwal, representing Ilford South, is under scrutiny following reports of poor conditions in his rental properties.

The BBC revealed issues like black mould and ant infestations in flats owned by him.

Athwal, also a Redbridge councillor, expressed shock and profound regret, promising swift repairs.

Managed by an agency, Athwal claimed he was unaware of the issues.

Redbridge Council's Conservative leader, Paul Canal, called for Athwal's resignation, citing the properties as a 'disgrace' and questioning his role's viability.

Athwal owns 15 properties, making him the largest landlord in the House of Commons.

Canal and Andrew Boff of the London Assembly demanded an investigation for a potential breach of Redbridge's code of conduct.

Additionally, the BBC found various safety and maintenance issues in Athwal’s properties, and one tenant reported eviction threats from the letting agent.

Athwal admitted his flats lacked proper licensing, a requirement he had implemented as former Redbridge Council leader.

Although renewing the licenses, Canal labeled this as 'scandalous hypocrisy.' Amidst calls for Sir Keir Starmer to intervene, housing ombudsman Richard Blakeway highlighted the need for private tenants to have redress scheme access.

Athwal, self-described as a 'renters' champion', emphasized his record of never evicting tenants.

Redbridge Council acknowledged the situation but withheld comments on individual cases.
