This charge was reportedly levied by her landlord to allow her dog, a cockapoo named Bella, to reside at the property.
The claim was processed and approved by parliamentary authorities, adhering to existing rules that govern MPs' expenses.
In defense of the claim, a Labour Party spokesperson stated that MPs often work from multiple locations, which necessitates accommodation that can accommodate personal pets.
They noted that many other MPs make similar claims, and emphasized that this practice has received prior approval from the parliamentary expenses watchdog, the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA).
Ms. Owatemi has a history of being vocal about animal welfare and has actively supported charities like the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.
The regulations allow MPs who represent constituencies outside of London to claim back rent and related expenses for their accommodation in the capital.
Following the public revelation of the claim, IPSA acknowledged that they had authorized the payment for the pet rent but conceded that the designation of the expense had been incorrectly advised.
An official apology was issued to Ms. Owatemi, with IPSA expressing regret for any confusion caused by the miscommunication regarding the description of the claim.
