BBC reported that Athwal owns 15 rental flats, with several tenants in one block claiming they regularly have to clean mould from their bathroom ceilings.
Ant infestations were also reported in these properties.
Athwal, who was previously the leader of Redbridge council, denied awareness of the issues and of any tenant being threatened with eviction.
