Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer Refuses to Take a Side in London's ULEZ By-Election Dispute

Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, has refused to take a side in a by-election dispute over whether to expand London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

The Labour candidate in the Uxbridge by-election, Danny Beales, wants the expansion halted, while Labour's London mayor, Sadiq Khan, is trying to fulfill his legal obligations to reduce emissions.

Sir Keir declined to say which view he backed, but acknowledged that both Mr. Khan and Mr. Beales are trying to fight for their respective positions.

The ULEZ was introduced in central London in 2019 and is set to be expanded to three times its current size on August 29th.

The expansion has proven to be contentious in outer London boroughs and is seen as a key issue in the by-election.

Conservative candidate Steve Tuckwell opposes the expansion, while the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party support it.

Five Conservative-led councils have filed a legal challenge against London Mayor Sadiq Khan's plan to expand London's congestion charge zone.

The councils argue that Khan lacks the legal authority to implement the expansion.

The Conservatives recently won their first seat on Cambridge City Council in a decade, partly due to opposition to a proposed congestion charge in the city.
