In a formal audience at Buckingham Palace, King Charles III welcomed Canada's new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, acknowledging an important moment for both leaders.

Carney, who has taken on the role following Justin Trudeau’s tenure, expressed gratitude for the King’s support, stating that Canada is fortunate to have a 'steadfast defender' in their sovereign against recent threats to its economy and sovereignty from the United States.

During the meeting held in the 1844 Room of the royal residence, the King praised the significance of the relationship between a monarch and a prime minister.

Dressed in a red tie, reminiscent of the Canadian flag, Charles greeted Carney and congratulated him on his new position.

The pair noted the importance of their meeting, which lasted approximately 30 minutes and took place without aides, adhering to royal protocol for such audiences.

Carney appears to have experienced challenges before the royal audience, remarking on the loss of his Order of Canada pin, which he humorously described as a 'bit of disaster.' In exchange, King Charles offered his own pin, garnering a light-hearted exchange between the two leaders.

The conversation, while private, reflects the friendly rapport developed over years, including multiple meetings during Carney's time as governor of the Bank of England.

This encounter marks their first meeting since Carney's appointment and the first since Charles ascended to the throne.

Their last discussion occurred in March 2020. Notably, prior to their meeting, King Charles had personally reached out to Carney upon his swearing-in as Prime Minister.

Canada remains engaged in international discussions, particularly concerning contributions to a proposed peacekeeping force in Ukraine amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Recently, King Charles met with former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau shortly after hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Sandringham, demonstrating the King’s active role in global affairs.

A royal source has stated that King Charles is 'very conscious' of his global responsibilities and is committed to exercising his diplomatic role within constitutional limits.

The Order of Canada, which recognizes outstanding achievements in various fields, is a significant honor, with all members receiving a distinctive lapel pin.

Carney himself was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2014 due to his contributions to financial policy both domestically and internationally.
