Kim Jones Reinvents the Fairytale in Spring/Summer 2021 Haute Couture Collection

Fendi's Spring/Summer 2021 Haute Couture collection is Kim Jones' debut in womenswear.

Demi Moore glides down the runway in a black off-the-shoulder pantsuit as she opens the Fendi Spring/Summer 2021 Haute Couture runway show. To her side, a mirror replicates her image infinitely within the setting of a museum-like structure. She reaches the end of the path before stepping off and onto a patch grassy terrain behind a glass wall, incasing herself like a gallery exhibition.

In September, Fendi announced that Dior Men designer Kim Jones would take the helm as Artistic Director of Fendi's womenswear and Haute Couture collections, succeding Silvia Venturini Fendi, the creative mind behind the brand's menswear and accessories. Fendi had taken on the expanded role following the death of fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld. Inspired by Virginia Woolf's Charleston home, Jones and Fendi collaborated on a collection of romantic outfits that pay homage to Woolf's love of family, books, and Vita Sackville-West.

Jones' collection, his first time designing women's fashion, presents a mystical series of pieces that meshes Bridgerton-esque aesthetics (see: Kate Moss's empire waist gown) with the glitz and glam of the Roaring '20s. Bella Hadid donned a cutout halter dress with a beaded bodice and sheer overlay; Cara Delevingne strutted in sparkling pink marble trousers and a matching matador jacket. The ensembles feel welcome at both a Regency-era ball or a backroom speakeasy mid-Prohibition; coversative necklines are paired with opulent materials and lavish jewels. For the finale, Naomi Campbell walks the runway in a marble-printed gown and long-trained cape fit for a queen. As she reaches the end, she steps behind a glass casing and up a few stairs before turning around to look out and greet her subjects.
