Starmer has pledged to invest in renewable sources of energy and nuclear power instead.

However, some unions, including the GMB, are concerned about job security for oil and gas workers.

While Starmer stressed the importance of oil and gas in the energy mix, GMB's general secretary Gary Smith reiterated his criticism of Labour's approach and urged the party to focus on a mix of energy sources.

The Unite union has also criticised Labour's stance.

Energy policy is expected to be a key battleground for Labour in the run-up to the next election.
