The announcement was made in a statement released on Thursday, where the group declared that their initial demand for the government to end new oil and gas licensing has now become a component of official government policy.
Just Stop Oil claims to have successfully prevented over 4.4 billion barrels of oil from being extracted and highlighted recent court rulings that deemed new oil and gas licenses as unlawful.
Despite this announcement, the group acknowledges that its commitment to its cause remains unchanged, hinting at a shift in strategy while emphasizing the ongoing trials faced by its members, including potential legal repercussions stemming from past protests.
The UK's Labour government has stated that it will not issue new licenses for oil and gas exploration, aligning its stance with recent judicial decisions that have stalled various fossil fuel projects across the country.
Notable cases include efforts to block oil drilling in Surrey, a proposed coal mine in Cumbria, and developments in the Rosebank and Jackdaw fields in the North Sea, largely due to concerns regarding climate pollution.
In contrast, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and his administration have distanced themselves from Just Stop Oil's tactics.
Starmer criticized the group for its disruptive actions and has affirmed that protesters must face legal consequences for their behavior.
Following the announcement of the group's strategic shift, a spokesperson for the Prime Minister asserted that the government has not conceded to any of Just Stop Oil’s demands, explicitly defending the long-term role of oil and gas in the UK’s energy policy.
The spokesperson refuted claims that the government had facilitated a 'win' for Just Stop Oil, asserting that the government’s position regarding energy security remains unchanged.
There was also clarification that the government has not agreed to any notion of 'shutting down the North Sea,' stating that any future plans for energy resources remain consistent with current policy.
Just Stop Oil, founded in April 2022, has engaged in a wide range of protests aimed at compelling the UK government to cease fossil fuel licensing.
The group is linked to several prominent activist organizations, including Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain.
Their recent actions included notable disruptions, such as storming the track during the British Grand Prix and targeting high-profile cultural events like a performance of Les Misérables in London.
The group has a history of dramatic protests designed to garner media attention and public discourse, including vandalism of art pieces and significant disruptions to public spaces and transport systems.
In July 2024, attempts were made by activists to obstruct operations at London Heathrow Airport as part of a broader Europe-wide campaign.
With this latest announcement, Just Stop Oil reiterates its commitment to tackling what it describes as “obscene and genocidal policy” surrounding fossil fuel extraction, while redefining its approach to advocacy in light of the changing political landscape.
