Junior doctors in England have escalated their strike action, starting a major walkout that could affect emergency care during a peak season.

The British Medical Association, representing 50,000 junior doctors, initiated a three-day strike and plans a further six-day strike from January 3 to 9 due to a pay dispute.

Cheltenham General Hospital is closing its A&E due to these pressures, and London hospitals have urged the public to reserve A&E for genuine emergencies only. The doctors, who have left pay talks after a proposed 8-10% raise, are demanding a 35% increase to match the inflation over several years.

Health Minister Victoria Atkins states contingency plans are in place to minimize disruption and invites the BMA to resume talks. Hospital leaders express concern over the impact of consecutive strikes during the holiday period, predicting significant challenges.

The NHS has seen 1.2 million cancellations this year due to strikes, obstructing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's goal of reducing waiting times. Recent pay deals have settled potential strikes by nurses and senior doctors, yet the junior doctors' dispute persists. Work and Pensions Minister Mel Stride has expressed regret over the breakdown in negotiations.
