After a collision with a coast guard plane post-arrival from Hokkaido, the fire started as the jet skidded along the runway. Despite a nose gear collapse, everyone escaped via emergency slides within 20 minutes, just as the plane was consumed by fire.
Tragically, the coast guard craft, en route to assist earthquake victims, crashed with five fatalities.
Passengers feared the worst amid panic and smoke. In one dramatic moment captured on video, a child pleaded for an exit to be opened. Expert Terence Fan highlighted the crew and passengers' textbook response, noting the lack of cabin luggage retrieval during the evacuation as exemplary.
Officials and experts commended the efficient escape, emphasizing it as a demonstration of successful safety protocols. Passenger testimonies spoke of swift and decisive actions, moments of terror, and palpable relief, underscoring the overwhelming gratitude felt by those who walked away unharmed.
