Italy's government has extended the country's state of emergency regarding migrants for an additional six months.

The extension of the state of emergency for migrants is due to the "exceptional increase in the flow of migrants entering the national territory through Mediterranean migration routes," according to a decision by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Civil Defense Minister Nello Musumeci, published on May 28 in the official gazette.

The measure emphasized that "the declaration of the state of emergency was made to address situations that require the use of exceptional means and powers due to their intensity and scale."

The extension was requested in a document from the Ministry of the Interior due to the ongoing situation.

In the same document, the ministry illustrated the "complex development of the international crisis scenario, which is expected to trigger increasing waves of migration potentially reaching Mediterranean shores through Libya, as well as a significant rise in the arrival of foreign nationals, especially now that Italy has favorable weather and sea conditions."
