Israeli Official Suggests Gazans Emigrate Voluntarily

A leading member of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, has suggested that Gazans should voluntarily emigrate. Smotrich, representing a religious nationalist party, agreed with a proposal in a Wall Street Journal article that Western nations should welcome Gazan families wanting to resettle.

This stance is causing concern in the Arab world, raising fears of a second "Nakba"—a reference to the mass displacement of Palestinians in 1948 when Israel was established. Smotrich argues that Gaza, lacking resources and small in size, cannot remain independent and that emigration would be a humane solution to end the decades of refugee status, poverty, and conflict in the region.

The call comes amid an ongoing Israeli military operation in Gaza, a densely populated territory governed by Hamas, which led to the recent cross-border attack resulting in Israeli casualties and hostages taken by Hamas. Israel's campaign has killed over 11,000 Palestinians and ravaged Gaza, leading Israel to advise northerners to move south for safety.

Despite Israel's 2005 withdrawal from Gaza, Netanyahu has indicated that while Israel won't establish a permanent presence, it will maintain security control indefinitely. The international community, including the United States, asserts that Palestinians should govern Gaza.
