Israeli Forces Search Gaza's Largest Hospital Amid Siege Concerns

On November 15, Israeli soldiers entered Al Shifa, Gaza City's largest hospital, conducting searches and adding to fears for civilians trapped during a days-long siege. Despite Israel asserting that Hamas had used underground tunnels at the facility as an operational base—a claim Hamas rejects—the troops claimed to encounter no resistance within the hospital, finding weapons and "terror infrastructure."

With international focus on both trapped patients without functioning medical equipment and thousands of displaced seeking shelter, Gaza officials reported deaths including three infants due to Israel's encirclement. Israel, in turn, distributed images of supplies being delivered to the hospital, emphasizing assistance and support provided to those in need.

As Israeli troops conducted their searches, eyewitnesses inside the hospital relayed scenes of calm yet tension, and although sporadic shooting was reported outside, no injuries within the hospital grounds were immediately known.

The military cited encounters with explosive devices and Hamas fighters prior to entering the hospital. Hamas, however, accused Israel of propagating falsehoods to justify targeting Gaza's healthcare facilities.

Meanwhile, medical staff described fearful conditions and ongoing tank activity within the hospital grounds. The U.N. aid chief reiterated that hospitals must not serve as battlefields, calling for the protection of all civilians, including medical personnel and patients.

Israeli actions in Gaza, described as an effort to eliminate Hamas after a critical breach on October 7 leading to Israeli civilian casualties and captives taken, are part of a broader campaign which has seen extensive airstrikes. Over 11,000 Palestinian fatalities have been reported by local health officials, with a significant proportion being children.

Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israel, backed by the U.S., has continued its offensive, although negotiations mediated by Qatar have contemplated a temporary halt to hostilities for humanitarian relief and a potential exchange of captives.
