Tensions between Israel and France have intensified after Israeli police detained two French consulate staff members at the Eleona church compound in Jerusalem, a site owned by France.

The incident took place on November 7, 2024, during a scheduled visit by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.

Israeli officers reportedly entered the site without permission and detained the staff despite their diplomatic status, prompting Barrot to intervene for their release.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry stated that the consulate staff refused to identify themselves, leading to the brief detention.

A video of the incident showed a forceful arrest, adding to the diplomatic tensions.

The Eleona church, part of the French national domain in Jerusalem, is one of four sites administered by France and is located on the Mount of Olives.

Following the incident, France's Foreign Ministry announced plans to summon Israel’s ambassador.

Barrot, who is in Jerusalem, underscored the importance of diplomatic solutions to Middle Eastern conflicts amid calls for a ceasefire, citing the rising civilian casualties in Gaza and Lebanon.

This event occurs amidst tensions between the two countries, heightened by French President Emmanuel Macron’s calls to cease arms exports to Israel and criticism of Israeli military actions in Lebanon.

Relations worsened following Israel's operations against Hezbollah and were further strained by European outrage over attacks affecting UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.

Previous altercations between French officials and Israeli security at French-controlled sites in Jerusalem, including a notable 2020 incident involving Macron at the Church of Saint Anne, have also contributed to ongoing diplomatic challenges.
