Israel and Hamas Extend Gaza Ceasefire as More Hostages Are Released

Israel and Hamas have agreed to extend their ceasefire in Gaza by an additional 48 hours, providing an opportunity for further prisoner exchanges. This extension allows for more humanitarian aid and continued negotiations. The ceasefire, originally set to expire Tuesday, has already seen the safe return of 11 hostages to Israel and the release of 33 Palestinian prisoners, totaling 150 freed since the truce began.

The UN Secretary-General praised the renewal of the truce, emphasizing the importance of sustaining the flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza and protecting civilians.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will discuss the need for continued humanitarian assistance, hostage release, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state during his upcoming visit to the Middle East.

The truce's extension was welcomed internationally amid calls for increased civilian support in Gaza, which has suffered significant infrastructure damage and civilian casualties due to Israeli military campaigns.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu affirmed Israel's ongoing commitment to freeing hostages and confronting Hamas, with no indications of a permanent halt to the offensive. International bodies, including the UN, have called for independent investigations into alleged war crimes committed since the conflict's escalation on October 7.
