Ireland Plans Legal Action Against UK Over Legislation Hindering Investigations into Northern Irish Violence

Ireland plans to take the UK to the European Court of Human Rights over the UK's Northern Ireland Legacy Act.

22 December 2023 · 00:54 UTC

This legislation prevents further legal action on past violence in Northern Ireland, a move Irish Foreign Minister Micheál Martin says breaches the European Convention on Human Rights and earlier bilateral agreements.

As of May 2024, the act will halt new criminal probes and lawsuits, offering immunity to those who come forward to a fact-finding commission.

This is Ireland's first case against the UK in Strasbourg since 1971. Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton-Harris defends the act, deeming Ireland's action as "misguided." The new tension adds to the existing strain from Brexit disagreements.
