Iran Executes Man for Killing Policeman During 2022 Protests, According to Report

Iran has carried out the capital punishment of a man for fatally running over a police officer and wounding five others during the 2022 protests in Tehran, Al Jazeera reports.

The man, Mohammad Ghobadlou, was accused of "corruption on earth" and his execution follows a Supreme Court decision, despite initial postponement for a psychiatric review. Human rights groups contested the verdict, alleging an unfair trial.

These protests erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody due to her failure to comply with strict dress codes. Ghobadlou's case is the eighth execution related to violent acts against security forces during these events.

Although Amnesty International argued that his trial was unjust and ignored his reported bipolar disorder, Iranian authorities dismissed these mental incapacity claims.

Public outcry, including from Ghobadlou's family, occurred earlier in the month outside a Karaj prison, protesting against his and another young man's sentencing.
