The find was reported by employees at the Biffa waste processing facility located on the outskirts of the town at approximately 11:40 AM on Sunday.
Following the discovery, authorities confirmed that the remains were indeed human, prompting a police investigation.
Detective Inspector Chris Pringle, who leads the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team at Cleveland Police, stated that the investigation is in its early stages and characterized it as complex and sensitive given the circumstances under which the remains were found.
He emphasized that a dedicated team of detectives is working diligently to identify the remains and to uncover the circumstances leading to their presence at the recycling plant.
Pringle acknowledged the concerns within the local community, particularly among families of missing persons, and reassured the public that any relevant developments will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
The recycling facility has been closed since the remains were found, and a spokesperson for Biffa confirmed that the site remains closed until further notice, stating that they are unable to provide comments on the ongoing investigation.
Police have indicated that the process to identify the remains will involve numerous procedural steps and may take significant time to complete.
