A 27-year-old man died shortly after being arrested by Border Force officers at Manchester Airport on Wednesday.

The man was reportedly displaying unusual behaviour prior to his arrest, leading officers to intervene.

Following his apprehension, he was transported to a holding area where he subsequently became unwell, prompting the call for paramedics.

Emergency services were unable to resuscitate him, and he was pronounced dead at 1.53 PM.

In response to the incident, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) announced that an investigation has been initiated after receiving a referral from the Home Office.

IOPC investigators were dispatched to the scene on the same day to commence evidence gathering.

IOPC director Amanda Rowe expressed condolences to the man's family and loved ones, emphasizing the importance of a thorough investigation in such circumstances.

Rowe stated, "When someone dies after being taken into custody, it is important for there to be a thorough investigation to understand what has happened." The IOPC has engaged with the family of the deceased to outline their investigative role and ensure they are kept informed as the process unfolds.

At this stage, the investigation is in its early phases, and the IOPC has indicated that no further information is available.

The Home Office has been approached for additional comments regarding the incident.
