Authorities have initiated a criminal investigation into a police officer following a fatal collision in Cumbria, which resulted in the death of 64-year-old Sharron Hall and her dog.

The incident occurred on Cleator Moor Road in Whitehaven, around 7:50 am on Sunday, January 19. Sharron Hall, a grandmother and mother of four, was identified as the victim.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is overseeing the investigation.

Their initial findings indicate that Ms. Hall was driving a Suzuki Celerio when it was involved in a collision with a police vehicle, a Peugeot 308 estate.

At the time, three police officers, in separate vehicles, were responding to an emergency call.

The IOPC reports that after the collision, Ms. Hall was transported to the hospital, where she subsequently died from her injuries the following day.

Her dog, Jack, was also killed in the crash.

In response to this incident, a police officer has been informed they are subject to a criminal investigation and an internal investigation for potential gross misconduct.

The IOPC clarified that notification of these investigations does not necessarily imply further legal proceedings will ensue; this will depend on evidence obtained during the investigative process.

The family of Ms. Hall released a statement remembering her as a 'special, caring woman' who dedicated over 20 years to working at the Howgill Family Centre.

Ms. Hall's family expressed their deep loss, highlighting her loving and giving nature.

IOPC Director of Engagement, Amanda Rowe, expressed condolences: 'Our thoughts are with Ms. Hall’s family and friends, and all those affected by this tragic incident.' She emphasized the independent and thorough nature of the investigation, noting the mandatory requirement for police forces to report incidents resulting in death or serious injury.

Cumbria Police have been notified and additional evidence, including dashcam and body-worn camera footage, is being reviewed by investigators as part of the ongoing inquiry.
