Downing Street confirmed that 'appropriate action' would be taken in light of the findings.
Reportedly, the documents contained details pertaining to soldiers’ ranks, shift patterns, email addresses, weapon issue records, and access information for military facilities.
They are believed to be associated with units based at Catterick Garrison in Yorkshire.
Among the materials recovered was a sheet headed 'armoury keys and hold IDS codes', which appears to reference an armoury and intruder detection system.
The documents were discovered by local resident Mike Gibbard, who identified the materials while parking for a football match.
Gibbard expressed concern upon recognizing the nature of the documents.
He described the scene as alarming, with details from the papers highlighting security protocols, including perimeter checks, weapon handling, leave requests, and contact information for high-ranking officers.
According to government guidance, some 'official – sensitive' documents, if compromised, could pose a 'threat to life'.
Following the discovery, the documents were handed over to Northumbria Police, who subsequently transferred them to the Ministry of Defence.
A spokesperson for the MoD acknowledged the situation, stating, 'We are aware that documentation allegedly relating to the department was recently handed in to the police.
We are looking into this urgently and the matter is the subject of an ongoing internal investigation.'
Furthermore, government guidelines advocate for the secure disposal of sensitive materials through shredding or using designated 'burn bags'.
A spokesperson from Number 10 stated, 'The Ministry of Defence is currently examining the documents handed to the police, but the matter is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Army.
While this process is underway, we cannot comment on specifics, but appropriate action will be taken regarding any potential information breach.'
