Intel Restores Free Coffee and Tea Amid Cost-Cutting Measures

Tech giant aims to boost employee morale following significant layoffs

In an effort to uplift employee morale after implementing substantial cost-cutting measures, Intel plans to restore free coffee and tea for its in-office workforce.

This move follows recent layoffs affecting 15,000 employees as part of a broader cost-reduction strategy.

The announcement was made via an internal message, which acknowledged ongoing financial challenges but emphasized the importance of small comforts in daily workplace routines.

However, free fruit will not be reintroduced, a change from previous employee perks.

Intel, historically a leader in the tech industry, has faced several strategic setbacks, including missing out on key opportunities in mobile chips and artificial intelligence.

Notably, in 2013, Paul Otellini, then CEO of Intel, expressed regret over not securing a deal to produce chips for Apple's iPhone.

In the late 2010s, Intel also passed on investing in OpenAI, which is now a major player in AI, due to skepticism about the market potential of AI models.

Additionally, Intel has experienced delays in its manufacturing processes, such as troubles with its 7-nanometer chips in 2020, allowing competitors like Samsung and TSMC to advance.

As a result of declining valuation, Intel intensified its cost-saving measures, including the reduction of employee benefits such as internet, phone, and commuting reimbursements.

In September, it was announced at one of Intel's Oregon offices that free beverages and fruits would be suspended, prompting reactions from employees regarding the value of such perks.
