A recent investigation has found that numerous car and home insurers are imposing annual percentage rates (APRs) on monthly payment options that are comparable to those charged by credit card providers.

According to research conducted by a consumer advocacy organization, a survey of 52 car insurers and 46 home insurers revealed that only three car insurers disclosed that they do not charge a fee for monthly payments.

In the case of home insurance, 19 out of 38 insurers reported no charges for monthly payment options.

The research indicates that the average APR for car insurance providers who charge for monthly payments stands at 22.84%, while home insurance providers average an APR of 21.59%.

It was noted that some insurers apply varying APRs depending on customer risk profiles or demographic factors.

Notably, certain rates reached or exceeded 30%, placing them in a similar range to credit card interest rates.

As of February, the average purchase APR for credit cards was reported at 35.42%, a benchmark that many credit card providers manage to maintain below.

The consumer group indicated that the risk associated with non-payment for insurers is comparatively lower than that of credit card lenders, as insurers have the ability to terminate policies in cases of non-payment.

In response to these practices, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is undertaking a market study focused on pricing practices across the insurance sector.

Estimations suggest that over 20 million individuals opt to pay for their insurance premiums in installments.

Research from the FCA has shown that 79% of adults facing financial challenges have utilized monthly payment options.

In light of these findings, a representative from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) emphasized the importance of offering monthly payment options for consumers seeking ways to manage their insurance expenses.

The ABI acknowledged that these options come with associated costs for insurers but reiterated their commitment to ensuring that any charges applied are fair, transparent, and reflective of actual costs.

The ABI stated that it will continue to engage with its members on this issue and anticipates insights from the FCA's ongoing review.
