Indi Gregory: Life-support withdrawn from critically ill baby

Life-support treatment has been withdrawn from Indi Gregory, an eight-month-old baby girl suffering from mitochondrial disease, following a legal battle.

Indi, who was being treated at Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) in Nottingham, was moved to a hospice after specialists determined they could do no more for her. This decision came despite her parents, Dean Gregory and Claire Staniforth from Ilkeston, Derbyshire, wanting her to continue receiving treatment.

The couple had lost legal fights in the High Court and Court of Appeal to keep treating their daughter. Their appeals to transfer Indi to a hospital in Rome and to overturn the court's decision were also rejected. The Court of Appeal judges agreed with the initial ruling that moving Indi to Italy would not be in her best interests.

The High Court judge, Mr Justice Peel, had ruled that limiting treatment would be lawful and in Indi's best interests. The case was heard in private hearings in the Family Division of the High Court in London.

Specialists had argued that the treatment Indi was receiving was causing her pain and was futile, a point of contention with her parents. Christian Concern, a group supporting Indi's family, stated that she was "fighting hard" despite the withdrawal of life support.
