The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has rejected the appeal by the parents of a critically ill baby, Indi Gregory, to continue her life-support treatment.
A High Court judge had previously ruled that doctors could withdraw support for Indi, who has mitochondrial disease, against her parents' wishes. Despite the challenge by the parents, the Court of Appeal judges dismissed their case.
The parents sought to have the ECHR "prohibit" the withdrawal of "life-sustaining treatment," but the ECHR refused and stated that its decision could not be appealed. Indi's condition is incurable, and doctors at Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre have determined that they can do no more for her.
