In a perplexing case of sleep-induced misadventure, a 62-year-old man, Mark Dicara, found himself in hot water after accidentally shooting himself in the leg during a dream. Authorities in Lake Barrington, Illinois, have pressed charges against Dicara, who they say fired his weapon while dreaming of a burglary.

The incident occurred on April 10 when deputies from the Lake County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a resident with a gunshot wound. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered Dicara nursing a wound to his leg.

A Tourniquet and A Dream

Quick thinking by the responding deputies helped prevent a tragedy, as a tourniquet was applied to Dicara's leg to stem the significant blood loss.

During questioning, Dicara recounted his surreal experience to the authorities. He stated that during his dream, he imagined an intruder breaking into his home. In his sleep, he retrieved his .357 Magnum Revolver and fired at the perceived burglar. The gunshot, however, ended up penetrating his own leg, which roused him from his slumber.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that the bullet went through Dicara's leg and lodged into his bedding. The release went on to say, “Fortunately, the round did not travel through a shared wall with Dicara's neighbors.”

An investigation by the authorities found no evidence of an actual attempted burglary, confirming that the events Dicara experienced were limited to his dream.

Legal Consequences

Dicara's misfortune did not end with his inadvertent self-inflicted wound. Authorities discovered that he possessed a firearm with a revoked Firearm Owners Identification. Illinois state law mandates that gun owners must have a Firearm Owners Identification card to legally possess firearms or ammunition.

Consequently, Dicara was charged with possessing a firearm with a revoked Firearm Owners Identification and reckless discharge of a firearm. He was arrested on a warrant but is now free after posting a $150,000 bond. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has stated that Dicara is scheduled to make his next court appearance on June 29.

As this unusual case moves through the legal system, it serves as a reminder of the unpredictable and potentially dangerous situations that can arise when firearms are not handled or stored responsibly.
