I Wouldn't Lie To The People Of JVD! Premier On Island's New Year's Celebrations

I Wouldn't Lie To The People Of JVD! Premier On Island's New Year's Celebrations

One of the most highly anticipated yearly events on Jost Van Dyke – the Old Years’ Night festivities – may not be held this year due to COVID-19 fears.
Premier and Minister for Hon. Andrew Fahie told residents of the sister island yesterday, October 22 2020, that at this particular juncture, it is unlikely to happen.

The event usually attracts hundreds of residents and visitors as persons celebrate the old year and ring in the new on the island, known for its wild parties in the territory.

“I wouldn’t lie to the people of Jost Van Dyke; I cannot say yes or no. I would say we have to discuss that as a team, but based on what we are seeing right now, it will be a higher percentage of unlikely,” he said in response to question by a resident.

He explained that it was because of the Coronavirus that is plaguing the territory and the rest of the world.

“I know it is not a popular thing with some, but at the same time too, half a loaf is better than no loaf at all. So if we want to keep the economy going, or forfeit that for one night of fun, then that would be a good way to go.”

He added, “I have nothing against the celebration because this is one of the number one spots for it, but given the challenges that we are facing, I see it as very highly unlikely at this time. In life, you never know what could change.”

However, when pressured by the female resident for an answer, because she said it would allow the organizers to be able to plan, the Premier replied: “well let me help you, right now is no.”

The British Virgin Islands has one reported active case of the virus.
