'I want to give back': Doctor who fought rare cancer three times returns to work

Dr. Mel Oliver, who overcame osteosarcoma—a rare and aggressive bone cancer—three times, has returned to work at a hospital in East London. Osteosarcoma affects just 145 people annually in the UK and often involves the limbs.

Dr. Oliver endured intensive chemotherapy and had to have her thigh bone and knee joint replaced with a metal prosthesis. Despite facing the challenge of integrating back into school life with no hair and adjusting to physical changes, she was inspired by her experience with the NHS to become a doctor.

Her cancer returned twice more; once during her first year of medical school leading to the amputation of half of her left leg, and later to her lungs, necessitating further surgery.

After overcoming these hurdles, Dr. Oliver completed medical school and has been cancer-free since 2020. Now working as a junior doctor, she is also the face of the Bone Cancer Research Trust’s Bone Cancer Awareness Week campaign, aiming to give back to the health service that saved her life.
