Hurricane Dorian is now battering Canada as a ‘post-tropical cyclone’.

It made landfall on the province of Nova Scotia, with winds of 100mph, equivalent to a category 2 hurricane. More than 45,000 homes have been left without power in Halifax, the provincial capital of Nova Scotia, where a crane has also collapsed on a building as a result of the storm.

The government says it will deploy the military to help recovery efforts, after Dorian dropped more than 100 millimetres of rain on Nova Scotia by Sunday morning. Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau said the ‘safety of Canadian’s was his number one priority’.

Dorian tore through the Bahamas earlier this week as a category five storm, leaving 43 dead, a figure which is expected to ‘significantly rise’ according to the country’s prime minister, Hubert Minnis.

He described the devastation caused by the hurricane as the country’s ‘hour of darkness’. Mr Minnis said: ‘We acknowledge that there are many missing and that the number of deaths is expected to significantly increase.

‘This is one of the stark realities we are facing in this hour of darkness.’ Over 13,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged in the Bahamas, with hundreds of people still missing. The Royal Navy is also helping relief efforts in the country, providing emergency supplies as well as conducting search and rescue operations.
