Hunt Evaluates Cuts in Income Tax and National Insurance in the UK
UK Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt is contemplating income tax or national insurance reductions for lower and middle-income groups, as reported by the Sunday Times, citing insider information. Hunt, alongside Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, may also postpone expected cuts to inheritance tax due to concerns these would mainly benefit the wealthiest.
Hunt is set to deliver his Autumn Statement on November 22, aiming to boost the sluggish economy and the Conservative Party's prospects before next year's anticipated election. With pandemic-related spending and last year's high energy costs, public debt has ballooned to nearly 100% of GDP—triple what it was two decades ago.
Despite financial constraints, Hunt is predicted to have more leeway for fiscal maneuvering than previously thought, with new forecasts due before his statement. He has also hinted at sustaining current business investment incentives.
Contemplated measures include altering income tax rates or thresholds, which have been static despite inflation. Another proposal involves adjusting the benefits' price index reference month to October due to a significant drop in the price growth rate, as opposed to September.
