Houthi Rebels Relabeled as Terrorists by the US Following Red Sea Incidents

The US government has reclassified Yemen's Houthi rebels as a terrorist organization in response to their disruptive attacks on Red Sea shipping routes.

The move, an initiative to curtail the Iran-backed group's assaults, involves tough sanctions to cut off their access to funding and weapons.

While intended to prevent further shipping disturbances and regional destabilization following the Israel-Hamas conflict, there are concerns about the humanitarian impacts of sanctions on Yemen.

Previous sanctions were feared to worsen the dire aid situation in Yemen, where most of the population requires assistance.

The "Specially Designated Global Terrorist" label, reinstated by the Biden administration, does not include the harsher "foreign terrorist organization" categorization, allowing for more humanitarian flexibility.

Measures to protect Yemeni civilians from the sanctions' effects are to be established within 30 days.
