Hon Wheatley joins UK OT delegation for COP26 in Scotland

Virgin Islands (VI) Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) has joined officials from the Caribbean and other United Kingdom (UK) Overseas Territories (UK OTs) at the COP26, which is the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference, ongoing from October 31 to November 12, 2021, in Glasgow, Scotland.

The COP26 summit brings parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Hon Wheatley, commenting on the events, said: “Participation at the conference is an important move for the Territory since small island states such as ours will bear the brunt of the impacts of climate change. OTs will advocate for greater technical and financial assistance from the international community to adapt and mitigate the impacts.”

The VI Minister is being joined by Parliamentary Secretary of Anguilla, Quincia Gumbs-Merie, Deputy Premier of Bermuda Walter H. Roban, Turks and Caicos Minister of Tourism Josephine O. Connolly, Cayman Islands Premier G. Wayne Panton and Environment and Conservation Policy Officer Stephanie Martin of Tristan da Cunha.

More goals of the COP26 are to secure global net-zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach; adapt to protect communities and natural habitats, mobilise finance, and work together to deliver.

Delegations from 179 parties present

While in Glasgow, the delegation will have access to the Blue Zone, the United Nations-managed space that hosts the negotiations and brings together delegations from 197 parties. Access to the Blue Zone is restricted primarily to government ministers and accredited government officials. The Zone is the venue for the World Leaders’ Summit on November 1-2, 2021.

In the almost 30 years that the UN has been bringing together countries for the global climate summits, climate change has gone from being a fringe issue to a global priority.

More goals of the COP26 are to secure global net-zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach; adapt to protect communities and natural habitats, mobilise finance, and work together to deliver.
