Homes raided as part of investigation into Matt Hancock CCTV leak

Two homes have been raided in connection with the CCTV footage leaked from Matt Hancock’s office, the data protection watchdog has revealed.
Personal computer equipment and electronic devices were seized as part of the operation, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) said.

The watchdog is investigating an alleged data breach after images and footage was published that showed the former Health Secretary kissing a female aide.

The scandal brought down Mr Hancock’s Cabinet career after he admitted he had flouted the “no hugging” social-distancing rules that were in force at the time of his clinch with Gina Coladangelo.

As part of their investigation, ICO teams said they searched two residential properties in the south of England on Thursday.

It comes after the company which provides facilities management and CCTV for the Department of Health - EMCOR Group (UK) plc - reported a breach of personal data.

The company has alleged that images were taken from the department’s CCTV system without consent from either them or the Government. CCTV images were later published by The Sun newspaper on June 25.

Steve Eckersley, director of investigations at the ICO, said: “It’s vital that all people, which includes the employees of Government departments and members of the public who interact with them, have trust and confidence in the protection of their personal data.

“In these circumstances, the ICO aims to react swiftly and effectively to investigate where there is a risk that other people may have unlawfully obtained personal data. We have an ongoing investigation and will not be commenting further until it is concluded.”
